A great hash last night, thanks to Mr Bump and Blackadder. It was a special hash, in that it had been Blackadder’s birthday the previous week.
We initially huddled around in the vestibule of the Sloop Inn, Kingskerswell, but eventually ventured out into the cold and the rain to circle up.
Three long short splits; roughly two miles for walkers, three for shorts and four for longs…….
One can rarely avoid hills in Kingskerswell, and this hash was no exception! Thankfully most of the trail was on metalled surface otherwise things would have been very slippery!
As is often the pre-hash dilemma…Trail or road runners? I had this discussion with Beaver, with whom I was the joint FRB for a while. Beaver had opted for road, me trail, this being my default choice!
Plenty of checks to begin with in and around the streets of the centre of the village, before we ventured out into more open terrain.
For my half-marathon training regime, I am supposed to be picking up the distance. Technically it was supposed to be five miles so I settled with the four miles for the longs but working a bit harder by keeping up my pace. Which meant that I had the great pleasure of running beside Beaver for much of the trail with Man Pig slightly behind us. Now I’m unsure whether we became distracted or whether the marks had simply been washed away, but for a while we lost the marks, and were possibly off trail. It was at this point that Beaver and I lost contact with Man Pig. It turns out that Man Pig had also lost the trail and ventured out into the great unmarked unknown!
Fortunately Beaver and I eventually came upon Mr Bump who was standing sentinel, who directed us on the correct route. Beaver hung back with Mr B for a while, waiting for Man Pig. I gauged however that he never turned up, as it was not until we had settled at the pub that very wet and bedraggled Man Pig turned up, with his tale of woe of getting lost! With that he gave us an “on on” and left for home!
Later on we had the obligatory, severely out of tune, “Happy Birthday” for Blackadder and a technical “down down” for Mr B…..I say technical, as after a little soulful pleading, we permitted him to sup his beer.
The food was great and delicious and there was some great craic, and so all in all a great evening. Thank you Mr B and Blackadder.
Next week we’re at Bovey Tracey for the Hash’s 2222nd trail. So time to dust off those tutus
